How to Use This Calculator

Enter the length, width, and depth of the area where you plan to spread gravel. The calculator will determine the volume in cubic yards and the approximate weight in tons.

Calculation Process

  1. Convert depth from inches to feet.
  2. Calculate volume in cubic feet: Length × Width × Depth.
  3. Convert to cubic yards by dividing by 27.
  4. Calculate weight using the density you provided (lbs per cubic foot).
  5. Convert weight to tons (divide by 2000 lbs).

Important Tips

  • Density: Most gravel weighs between 90-110 lbs per cubic foot. Use 100 lbs/ft³ as a good average.
  • Depth: For driveways, 4-6 inches is common. For paths and gardens, 2-4 inches is usually sufficient.
  • Extra Material: Add 10-15% extra to account for settling and uneven spreading.
  • Compaction: Gravel settles over time, especially when first installed. Consider this when calculating depth.
